About Find Surname

Welcome to Find Surname, the most comprehensive and accessible directory of American family names. Our mission is to make demographic and historical census data easy to explore, understand, and share.

Our Data and Methodology

At Find Surname, we believe in transparency and accuracy. All the statistical and demographic information presented on our platform is sourced directly from the official United States Census Bureau.

Specifically, our database utilizes the "Frequently Occurring Surnames" dataset, which rigorously catalogs the most common surnames in America. To ensure accuracy and protect individual privacy, the Census Bureau intentionally excludes any surname borne by fewer than 100 people. As a result, our records provide a highly accurate demographic snapshot covering approximately 90% of the United States population.

Understanding Demographic Privacy

You may notice that for certain surnames—particularly those that are less common—specific ethnic or racial breakdowns are not displayed. This is not an error. Consistent with the U.S. Census Bureau’s strict confidentiality protocols, detailed demographic data is mathematically suppressed or withheld to protect individual anonymity. We respect and uphold these privacy standards in all the data we present.

Why We Built This

Genealogy and family history shouldn't be hidden behind complex government spreadsheets or expensive paywalls. We built this platform to democratize census data, transforming millions of rows of raw statistics into clean, readable, and insightful reports for over 150,000 distinct American surnames.
